MILLSTONE TRIES
TO DROP "NUCLEAR" FROM NAME
January 27, 2002
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is considering an application
by Dominion Nuclear Connecticut, Inc. to drop the word "nuclear" from
the formal name of the Millstone Nuclear Power Station, the Connecticut
Coalition Against Millstone announced today.
The name-change would allow the company to be formally known as the
"Millstone Power Station." "We reject Dominion's attempt to practice a
deceit," said Joseph H. Besade, a Coalition member who resides two miles
away from the facility long plagued with safety violations.
"If they're so ashamed to be in the nuclear profiteering business, they
should get out of it, not try to fool the public about what they do,"
Besade said.
"Let them drop 'nuclear' from the name when they've gone out of the nuclear
business," Besade said.
Dominion made a formal application to the NRC on August 8, 2001 to drop
the word "nuclear" from Millstone’s official name. The name-change application
requests that the word "nuclear" be deleted wherever the term "Millstone
Nuclear Power Station" appears in Millstone’s operating license.
The application also seeks to delete the word "nuclear" from the title
of the physical security program plans the nuclear plant is required to
maintain. The NRC has determined that the change is "purely administrative
and does not alter any regulatory requirements or commitments made by
the licensee."
