Niantic River Road: Cancer Alley?

On September 22, 2006, Martha Louise Crowell, of 250 Niantic River Road, passed away at the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. She was 77. She was a deeply respected member of the community and a dearly beloved grandmother. In an obituary published in The New London Day, her family asked that donations in her memory be made to the American Cancer Society - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Martha Louise Crowell at this time of sorrow.
We must ask: Is living on Niantic River Road a cancer death sentence?
Why is Niantic River Road "cancer alley"?
Are the deaths on Niantic River Road necessary?
Is Millstone responsible? If so, there is a cure: SHUT IT DOWN!

Do the Right Thing DPUC!

Connecticut's Nuclear Whistleblower Act guarantees that a Millstone employee who has been fired because he raised safety issues must be reinstated to his job or an equivalent.
Dominion fired Sham Mehta - under a ruse contrived by lawyers that his job was eliminated in a legitimate corporate reorganization - because he was dedicated to safety.
Sham Mehta shook the nuclear industry with his disclosure that Dominion routinely shuts down its security system to save money. He didn't know he would risk his job to protect the public.
By law, DPUC should have ordered Sham reinstated 9 months ago.
But DPUC - all Rowland-Rell appointees - is an outlaw agency. To date, it has treated Sham and the public with contempt.
DPUC: The whole world is watching you.
Do the right thing DPUC: Order Sham reinstated with full privileges and nuclear access as the law requires!

Millstone: Too Hot to Handle in the Heat?

It has been estimated that the energy in the waste heat released into the Long Island Sound by the Millstone Nuclear Power Station on an annual basis is equivalent to all the home heating oil used on Connecticut homes for a year.
The Union of Concerned Scientists has calculated that two-thirds of the energy created by the fission process at nuclear power plants such as Millstone is wasted.
Whatever happened to: Waste not, want not.
USC has also assessed how summer heat can affect the safety of nuclear power plants such as Millstone. Under the right conditions, a summer heat wave can lead to nuclear meltdown.

Gubernatorial Debate: Won't anyone utter the "M" word?

Katie the Goat and Her Kids, Cindy-Lu and Joe-Joe, keep watch as the candidates debate.

Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy and New Haven Mayor John DeStefano - candidates vying for the Democratic nomination to challenge Governor M. Jodi Rell - debated at the Garde Arts Theatre in New London on July 18. The debate was sponsored by The Day, New London's daily newspaper. No one from The Day asked the candidates' positions on the biggest threat to the region's health, safety and security: Millstone. Neither Malloy nor DeStefano responded to our candidates' survey prior to the debate. http://www.housegop.ct.gov/members/urban.asp
